These 18kt yellow gold hoop earrings are set all the way round with 122 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 0.33 ct. Spread across 122 stones, each one weighs around 0.003 ct and measures just under a millimetre in diameter. Stones this small are pressed into the setting one by one by hand, not set by machine. Why 122 small stones rather than a few large ones?
An unbroken row of small brilliant-cut diamonds gives an even band of light instead of isolated flashes. The effect comes from density, not size.
How do you set stones smaller than a millimetre?
Under the microscope. A seat is milled for each stone, the stone is laid in, and the metal is drawn over it with a graver. With 122 stones, a single slip makes the whole row look uneven.
Is there a second pair?
No. They were made as a one-of-a-kind piece. A new pair can be made to the same design.
