These 18kt white gold hoop earrings carry 84 multicolour brilliant-cut spinels totalling around 9 ct. Spinel was long considered second best, because people took it for ruby and were disappointed when the truth came out. Only in recent years has that mistake been put right. Since 2015 spinel has officially been a birthstone for August, and prices for top qualities from Mahenge in Tanzania have multiplied. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €4,500.
84 spinels. 9 carats. Fireworks.

Frequently asked questions
How do these hoops differ from the smaller pair?
In the number of stones and the total weight. This pair carries 84 spinels at around 9 ct, the other 64 spinels at around 7 ct for €3,800. Here, more stones mean a longer, more densely set line on the ear. The smaller pair stays more understated.
Why is spinel more sought after today than it used to be?
Because for centuries its confusion with ruby made it look like a mere copy. Today it is traded as a mineral in its own right, is mostly untreated and rare in top quality. Reasons enough for its addition to the birthstone list in 2015.
Are the stones treated?
As a rule, no. Heat treatment is industry standard for sapphire and ruby; spinel usually reaches the market just as it was found.
