This 18kt white gold ring carries a colour-change garnet of around 1 ct. Colour-change garnets show a different palette in daylight than under artificial light or candlelight: usually greenish to blue-green by day, reddish to violet in the evening. The effect arises because the stone transmits two regions of the spectrum, and depending on the light source the eye reads one or the other more strongly. It is the same mechanism as in alexandrite, only in a far rarer garnet. Handmade in Munich. €3,200, a one-of-a-kind piece.
A stone that changes its colour, like moods in the light.

Frequently asked questions
How visible is the colour change?
Clearly, but it depends on the light. Daylight and LED bring out the cooler side, incandescent bulbs and candlelight the warm one. The change is most striking when you walk in from outside into a room lit for the evening.
How does it differ from alexandrite?
The mechanism is the same, the mineral is not. Alexandrite is a chrysoberyl and one of the most expensive coloured stones there is. Colour-change garnet shows a comparable effect at a fraction of the price.
Is the stone treated?
Garnet is one of the stones that usually come to market untreated. Neither heat nor irradiation would improve the colour change, because it lies in the stone's chemical composition.
