This 18kt yellow gold ring carries a grey tourmaline in a hexagon cut, in size 54. In tourmaline, grey is the rare exception. The mineral is known for saturated colours like pink, green and blue, and grey material was long considered unsellable. Only in the last few years has it been valued as a category of its own. The six-sided step cut works with broad faces instead of many facets, so it shows the body colour rather than scattering it in reflections. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €1,400.
Angular. Elegant. Full of character.

Frequently asked questions
Why is grey tourmaline rare?
Because for a long time nobody was interested in it. Tourmaline is bought for strong colours, and grey rough was often never cut at all. That has since turned around. Quiet, desaturated tones have found a demand of their own, but the supply has stayed small.
What does the hexagon cut do?
It is a step cut: a few large faces instead of many small facets. Rather than sparkle, it shows the colour of the stone as one continuous surface. With a muted grey, that is the right decision, because a brilliant cut would dissolve the tone into flashes of light.
How robust is tourmaline?
Mohs hardness 7 to 7.5, so fine for everyday wear, but softer than sapphire. No ultrasonic cleaner, and better to take it off for rough work.
