This 18kt yellow gold ring carries two Malaya garnets side by side in the Moi et Toi style, in size 54. Moi et Toi means “me and you”: two equal stones instead of one central one. Napoleon gave Joséphine a ring of this form in 1796, and ever since it has stood for two people on one axis. Malaya garnets come from the Umba Valley on the border between Tanzania and Kenya. Their name comes from the Swahili word for outsider, because traders rejected them at first: they fitted no known garnet category. Handmade in Munich. €1,500, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Two garnets. One moment. Unforgettable.

Frequently asked questions
What does Moi et Toi mean?
French for “me and you”. Two stones sit side by side on the band, and neither is subordinate to the other. The best-known historical example is Napoleon's engagement ring for Joséphine de Beauharnais from 1796.
What is a Malaya garnet?
A blend of pyrope and spessartine, in tones between salmon, orange and reddish brown. It is found in the Umba Valley in East Africa. The name goes back to the Swahili word for outsider: the stones fitted no trade category and were only later recognised as a variety in their own right.
Does the ring work as an engagement ring?
Historically, that is exactly what it is. If you do not want a diamond, this form is an older and more personal alternative. If you wish, I make the same construction with other stones as a bespoke commission.
