This 18kt rose gold ring carries a 2.72 ct tanzanite flanked by rubies, in size 54. Tanzanite is found in a single place on earth: a field of a few square kilometres near Merelani in northern Tanzania, discovered only in 1967. That makes it, geologically, around a thousand times rarer than diamond. Its blue-violet colour shifts with the viewing angle, an effect called pleochroism that the cut deliberately brings out. Handmade in Munich. €3,200, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Deep blue meets warm gold. A piece that breathes.

Frequently asked questions
Why is tanzanite considered rare?
There is exactly one deposit in the world, near Merelani in Tanzania, and it is small. It has been mined since the late sixties, and estimates of how long it will last run to a few decades.
What is pleochroism?
The stone shows different colours from different directions. In tanzanite they are blue, violet and a brownish red. How the cutter orients the rough decides which colour dominates, which is why two tanzanites of the same weight can look very different.
Is tanzanite suitable for everyday wear?
At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it sits below sapphire and ruby, and it is prone to cleavage. It works well in a ring but will not forgive knocks against hard edges. Best taken off for sport and gardening.
