This 18kt white gold ring carries a 0.6 ct bi-colour sapphire in purple and red, accompanied by a 0.40 ct red spinel, in size 54. The stone sits exactly on a line the trade drew for itself: red corundum is called ruby, every other colour is called sapphire. A crystal with purple and red zones is therefore both and neither, and it is traded as a sapphire. Handmade in Munich. €2,800, one-of-a-kind piece.
Purple meets red, a sapphire that unites opposites.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the line between ruby and sapphire?
In the colour, not the mineral. Both are corundum. If it is red, it is called ruby; if it is purple, pink, blue, yellow or colourless, it is called sapphire. For a stone that shows both, the classification is a trade convention, not a scientific difference.
Is the stone treated?
No. With bi-colour sapphires the otherwise common heat treatment is out of the question, because it would even out the colour zones and so devalue the stone.
Why a red spinel alongside?
Spinel reaches a purer, clearer red than corundum at this size. And since spinel was long mistaken for ruby, it is the supposed impostor, of all stones, that sits here beside the genuine corundum. A detail for connoisseurs.
