This ring brought together 18kt white gold and 18kt yellow gold around a cushion-cut diamond encircled by 24 brilliant-cut diamonds. The cushion cut is the oldest diamond shape still in use: a square cushion with rounded corners, developed in the 18th century for candlelight. Its large facets give off less white sparkle than a modern brilliant cut, and more coloured fire in return. Made in Munich, sold for €2,250.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a comparable ring?
Yes. The two-tone construction and the halo can be recreated, in a different ring size too. The cushion-cut diamond would be a different stone; we agree on carat, colour and clarity beforehand.
What is a cushion cut?
A square to rectangular cut with rounded corners, named after its pillow-like shape. It goes back to the old mine cut of the 18th century and was the dominant diamond shape until the modern brilliant cut was developed in the early 20th century.
Why does a cushion sparkle differently from a brilliant?
Because its facets are larger. A modern brilliant cut is optimised for maximum white light return and flashes quickly. A cushion splits light more strongly into spectral colours, and the result is a calmer, warmer fire. The difference is clearest by candlelight.
