This 18kt white gold ring carries a green zircon of 3.15 ct, surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 0.40 ct, in size 54. To be clear: zircon is a natural mineral, zirconium silicate, and has nothing to do with cubic zirconia, the synthetic diamond imitation made from zirconium dioxide. Zircon refracts light more strongly than almost any other natural stone and comes closest to the fire of a diamond. In green it is rare. Handmade in Munich. €3,400, a one-of-a-kind piece.

Green and sparkling. Zircon, the unknown treasure.

Frequently asked questions

Is zircon the same as cubic zirconia?
No, and the confusion has hurt the stone for decades. Zircon is a naturally grown mineral. Cubic zirconia, zirconium dioxide in fully cubic form, is made in a laboratory and serves as a diamond imitation. Two completely different materials with similar-sounding names.

Why does zircon sparkle so much?
Because of its high refraction and dispersion. It splits white light into the colours of the spectrum with an effect similar to a diamond's, which is one reason colourless zircon was traded as a diamond substitute before synthetics were invented.

How robust is the stone?
Mohs hardness 6 to 7.5, but more brittle than sapphire. The facet edges can chip if knocked. Well suited to a ring, as long as you take it off for rough work.
