This ring brings together 18kt yellow gold and 18kt white gold around a 2.5 ct rubellite, flanked by six brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 0.63 ct, in size 54. Rubellite is the red to pink variety of tourmaline, and in the trade the name comes with a condition: the colour has to hold under artificial light. Strictly speaking, stones that tip towards brown in the evening may not carry the name. Handmade in Munich. €4,200, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Rubellite, pink like no other stone.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rubellite?
Tourmaline in red to vivid pink, coloured by manganese. Only a stone whose colour stays stable under artificial light may carry the trade name, a criterion many pink tourmalines do not meet.
Why do rubellites often have inclusions?
Because they grow under conditions that favour fine fractures and fluid inclusions. A completely flawless rubellite is the exception, not the rule. Inclusions are judged much as they are in emerald and are not considered a defect.
How robust is the ring?
Tourmaline has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5: fine for everyday wear, but softer than sapphire. For stones with visible inclusions, one more rule applies: no knocks against hard edges, no ultrasonic cleaner.
