This 18kt white gold ring holds a 1.77 ct blue sapphire in an Asscher cut, in size 54. Joseph Asscher developed the cut in Amsterdam in 1902: a square step cut with clipped corners, its deeply tiered facets creating a tunnel effect as you look into the stone, the famous “hall of mirrors”. In the 1920s it was the cut of Art Deco. In a coloured stone it shows depth of colour more clearly than a brilliant cut, which produces sparkle instead. Handmade in Munich. €3,700, one-of-a-kind piece.
The Asscher cut, the supreme discipline for a sapphire.

Frequently asked questions
What is an Asscher cut?
A square step cut with clipped corners, developed in Amsterdam in 1902. Instead of many small facets, it works with broad planes stepped like a staircase. Look down into it and you see a tunnel of mirrors.
Why Asscher rather than brilliant?
A brilliant cut maximises sparkle, a step cut maximises colour and clarity. With a coloured stone, that is the more interesting choice: you see the sapphire itself, not just its play of light.
Is the ring suitable for everyday wear?
Yes. Sapphire is corundum with a Mohs hardness of 9, just below diamond. Just mind the clipped corners: with any step cut the edges are the most vulnerable point, which is why the stone sits protected in its setting here.
