This 18kt white gold ring carries a 1.98 ct bicolour sapphire that shows blue and pink in a single crystal, surrounded by 44 brilliant-cut diamonds, in size 54. The two colours form while the crystal grows: when the chemical environment in the rock changes, the crystal takes up different trace elements zone by zone. Stones like this are never heated, because heat treatment would even out the zones and destroy their appeal. Handmade in Munich. €2,800, one of a kind.

Blue and pink in one: a sapphire that reconciles opposites.

Frequently asked questions

How do two colours end up in one stone?
Sapphire grows in the rock over long periods of time. If the composition of its surroundings changes along the way, a different trace element enters the crystal: chromium produces pink, iron and titanium produce blue. The result is visible colour zones instead of an even tone.

Is the stone treated?
No. The usual heat treatment is out of the question for bicolour sapphires, because it would even out the colour zones. They reach the market untreated, unlike most single-colour sapphires.

How does it compare with a parti sapphire?
A related principle. Parti sapphires typically show green, yellow and blue and almost always come from Australia. Bicolour simply describes two clearly separated colour zones, here blue and pink.
