These 18kt white gold hoop earrings carry 64 multicolour brilliant-cut spinels totalling around 7 ct. For centuries spinel was mistaken for ruby: the so-called Black Prince's Ruby in the British royal crown is in fact a spinel, recognised as such only in the 19th century. As a mineral in its own right, spinel occurs in almost every colour and, unlike sapphire or ruby, is usually left untreated. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €3,800.
64 multicolour spinels: fireworks at the ear.

Frequently asked questions
How do these hoops differ from the larger pair?
In the number of stones and the total weight. This pair carries 64 spinels at around 7 ct, the other 84 spinels at around 9 ct for €4,500. This pair stays more understated on the ear, while the larger one draws a longer, more densely set line.
What is spinel?
A mineral in its own right that was long taken for ruby. With a Mohs hardness of 8 it is hard enough for everyday wear, and it occurs in red, pink, blue, violet, grey and black.
Is spinel treated?
As a rule, no. While heat treatment is industry standard for sapphire and ruby, spinel usually reaches the market just as it comes out of the ground.
