This 18kt white gold ring carries an Akoya cultured pearl, framed by 42 blue sapphires totalling 0.38 ct, in size 54. Akoya pearls come from the Pinctada fucata oyster off the coast of Japan and have the sharpest lustre of all cultured pearls. Their nacre forms in especially thin, even layers, which reflect light like a mirror instead of scattering it. The blue sapphires pick up the pearl's cool undertone. Handmade in Munich. €1,399, one of a kind.
A pearl surrounded by blue fire.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Akoya pearls special?
Their lustre. The nacre of the Japanese Akoya oyster grows in particularly fine layers that reflect light sharply, which is why Akoya pearls look more mirror-like than freshwater pearls. In return, they stay smaller and their layer of nacre is thinner.
How delicate is the pearl in a ring?
Nacre has a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4.5, which makes it far softer than any gemstone on the same ring. Best taken off for hand washing, cleaning and sport. No ultrasonic cleaner, no cleaning agents.
Why blue sapphires with a white pearl?
Akoya pearls often have a slightly cool, silvery-rosé undertone. Blue sapphires pick it up and make it visible. Next to warm yellow gold, the same tone would disappear.
