This 18kt white gold ring with a black rhodium finish carries 70 black brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 0.14 ct, in size 54. Black diamonds owe their colour to dense inclusions of graphite and haematite that swallow light instead of refracting it. They do not sparkle, they gleam. That is why they look calm and even where white diamonds flash restlessly. The black rhodium on the white gold takes out the contrast, so stone and setting read as a single surface. Handmade in Munich. €750.
Black. Mysterious. Irresistible.

Frequently asked questions
Are black diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Chemically they are the same material as white diamonds, with a Mohs hardness of 10. The colour comes from inclusions of graphite and haematite packed so densely that no light gets through.
Why don't they sparkle?
Because they are opaque. The fire of a white brilliant comes from light refracting inside the stone. A black diamond reflects only at its surface, and the result is a metallic lustre rather than a flash.
Does the black rhodium finish wear off?
Yes, at points of friction, over the years. It is an electroplated surface layer, not an alloy. On a ring worn every day it shows first on the underside. I can have it reapplied at any time.
