This 18kt yellow gold eternity ring held 22 marquise-cut emeralds totalling 5.5 ct. Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured by chromium or vanadium, and belongs to the same mineral family as aquamarine and morganite. Almost every emerald carries natural inclusions, known in the trade as “jardin”. They are regarded as a mark of authenticity, not a flaw. The marquise cut tapers to a point at both ends and lets the stones interlock around the curve of the band. Made in Munich, sold for €6,500.
Emeralds like a forest in spring. Unforgettable.

Frequently asked questions
Can a comparable ring be made?
Yes. The construction, number of stones and cut can be taken up again. What cannot be repeated are the stones themselves, because every parcel of emeralds differs in colour and pattern. Price and timing depend on the matching marquises I can find on the market.
What does eternity mean?
The ring is set all the way round, not just on top. It looks the same from every side, but that makes its size practically impossible to change: the stones sit exactly where material would otherwise be removed for resizing. The size therefore has to be settled before the ring is made.
Why do emeralds have inclusions?
Emerald grows under conditions that barely allow for clean crystals. A completely inclusion-free emerald is so rare that inclusions are weighted differently in grading than they are with diamond. They make every stone recognisably its own.
How do I care for emerald jewellery?
No ultrasonic bath and no steam cleaning. Emeralds are often oiled to close fissures visually, and ultrasound and heat drive the oil out. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush.
