This 18kt gold ring carries South Sea cultured pearls, in size 54. South Sea pearls grow in the Pinctada maxima oyster off Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines and are the largest cultured pearls of all, typically 9 to 20 mm. They take two to four years to culture, so the nacre is correspondingly thick. It gives them their characteristic rich, almost creamy lustre, quite distinct from the sharp, mirror-like reflection of an Akoya pearl. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €1,150.

Frequently asked questions
What sets South Sea pearls apart from Akoya pearls?
Size and the character of their lustre. South Sea pearls are cultured for two to four years and reach 9 to 20 mm with a thick layer of nacre, which makes their lustre rich and soft. Akoya pearls stay smaller and have thinner nacre, but reflect more sharply.
Are the colours natural?
Yes. Depending on the type of oyster, the range runs from silver-white through champagne to gold. Dyed pearls usually give themselves away with an evenly saturated colour that has no transitions, and with traces of dye in the drill hole.
How do I care for a pearl ring?
Nacre has a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4.5, which makes it softer than any gemstone. Take the ring off for washing your hands, cleaning and sport. No ultrasonic cleaner, no cleaning products, no perfume directly on the pearl.
