This 18kt rose gold ring carries a 0.25 ct ruby framed by 16 brilliant-cut diamonds, in size 54. Ruby is red corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, simply coloured red by chromium. At 0.25 ct the stone is deliberately set as an accent of colour rather than a statement: per carat, ruby is one of the most expensive coloured stones of all, but at this size it stays wearable, both day to day and in price. Rose gold picks up the warm red instead of setting a cool contrast against it. Handmade in Munich. €1,600, a one-of-a-kind piece.
One ruby. Small, but unforgettable.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ruby and sapphire?
Only the colour. Both are corundum with a Mohs hardness of 9. If the stone is red, it is called ruby; every other colour, whether blue, pink, yellow, purple or colourless, is traded as sapphire. The red comes from chromium in the crystal.
Why is ruby so expensive?
Because chromium, which creates the colour, also encourages fractures in the growing crystal. Large, clean rubies are therefore exceptionally rare, rarer than diamonds of comparable size. Per carat, top-quality ruby is among the most valuable gemstones of all.
Is the ring suitable for everyday wear?
Very much so. With a Mohs hardness of 9, ruby sits just below diamond. Of all coloured stones, corundum is the most resilient, so a ruby ring copes with daily wear better than almost any alternative.
