This 18kt white gold ring carries a pink sapphire of around 1.1 ct in a hexagon cut, surrounded by eight royal blue sapphires, in size 54. Pink and blue are the same mineral here: corundum. Chromium turns it pink to red, iron and titanium turn it blue, so the colours are separated only by trace elements, not by origin. A six-sided cut is unusual for sapphire. It works with broad surfaces rather than facets and shows the colour more quietly than a brilliant cut. Handmade in Munich. €2,800, one of a kind.
Pink meets royal blue. A sapphire like no other.

Frequently asked questions
Are pink and blue sapphires the same material?
Yes. Both are corundum. Red corundum is called ruby; every other colour is called sapphire, including pink, yellow, green and colourless. The colour comes from trace elements: chromium for pink, iron and titanium for blue.
What is a hexagon cut?
A six-sided step cut. Instead of many small facets that scatter light, it works with a few large surfaces. The result is less sparkle and more colour, which makes it the more interesting choice for a strongly coloured stone.
Is the sapphire suitable for everyday wear?
Very much so. Corundum has a Mohs hardness of 9, just below diamond. A sapphire ring copes with daily wear better than almost any other coloured gemstone.
