This ring brings together 18kt white gold and 18kt rose gold around a 0.6 ct purple sapphire, accompanied by brilliant-cut diamonds, in size 54. Purple sapphire is corundum in which chromium and iron act at the same time: chromium pulls towards red, iron and titanium towards blue, and the result lies in between. It is exactly this mix that leaves it undervalued in the trade. Buyers look for blue or pink, the shade in between is passed over, and so it costs less than either. Handmade in Munich. €2,100, a one-of-a-kind piece.

Purple sapphire, a colour that seduces.

Frequently asked questions

Do sapphires really come in purple?
Yes. Sapphire is the umbrella term for any corundum that is not red: blue, pink, yellow, green, orange, colourless and, indeed, purple. Only red corundum is called ruby. Blue sapphires dominate the market so heavily that many people have never even heard of the other colours.

Why is purple sapphire less expensive than blue?
Because the demand is lower, not the quality. Hardness, durability and brilliance are identical; corundum is corundum. If you are not set on a particular colour name, the same money buys you a larger or cleaner stone here.

Why two colours of gold?
Because an in-between shade can hold two anchors. White gold draws out the blue in the sapphire, rose gold the red. Together they make both sides of the colour visible, instead of smoothing it into an indeterminate violet.
