This 18kt white gold ring carries a 6 ct grey spinel, accompanied by pink Jedi spinels, in size 54. Both stones are the same mineral at two extremes: grey is the most restrained colour spinel can take, Jedi the most intense. The trade name Jedi emerged around 2009 for neon-pink to red spinels from Mahenge in Tanzania, stones with no trace of grey or brown at all. Free, as the trade put it, from the dark side. Handmade in Munich. €3,900, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Grey meets neon, a ring made from a single mineral.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Jedi spinel?
A trade term for spinels in glowing neon pink to red, without any hint of grey or brown. The name arose around 2009, when material from the Mahenge region of Tanzania reached the market with a colour saturation beyond anything known before. Today Jedi spinels are among the most expensive spinels of all.
Why a grey spinel as the main stone?
Because in coloured stones, grey is a deliberate choice, not a stopgap. A six-carat grey spinel with a clear, even colour is rare, and in recent years grey spinel has become a collector's category of its own. Here it carries the expanse, and the pink sets the accents.
Are the stones treated?
As a rule, no. Spinel is one of the few gemstones that usually reach the market untreated, unlike sapphire and ruby, where heat treatment is standard. With a Mohs hardness of 8, it is fine for everyday wear.
