This necklace carries grey Tahitian cultured pearls 12.5 mm in diameter, set in 18kt white gold. Tahitian pearls grow in the black-lip oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia and are the only cultured pearls whose dark colour is entirely natural, with no dye or irradiation. 12.5 mm is at the upper end of the size range; most pearls on the market measure between 8 and 11 mm. Handmade in Munich. €6,500, one-of-a-kind piece.
Tahitian pearls: deep black, mysterious, unmistakable.

Frequently asked questions
Are Tahitian pearls dyed?
No. The colour lies in the nacre of the black-lip oyster itself and ranges from grey through green and peacock blue to aubergine. Dark pearls offered at a much lower price are usually dyed freshwater or Akoya pearls.
Why is 12.5 mm special?
Pearl size depends directly on how long the pearl is cultured. Every extra millimetre costs years and raises the risk that the oyster rejects the nucleus. Large pearls with an even surface are correspondingly rare.
How do I care for the necklace?
Last on, first off. Perfume, hairspray and acids attack the nacre. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing. Never put it in an ultrasonic cleaner.
