This 18kt rose gold ring carries a tanzanite of around 2 ct in an elongated emerald cut, held by four prongs, with pink spinel set as pavé along the band, in size 54. The emerald cut is a step cut: broad facets staggered like stairs instead of many small ones. For tanzanite this is a deliberate choice of colour over sparkle, and the stone shows its blue-violet as a calm surface. The elongated shape also lengthens the line of the finger. Handmade in Munich. €2,800, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Tanzanite and spinel. Blue meets pink.

Frequently asked questions
Why an emerald cut for a tanzanite?
Tanzanite is pleochroic: from different directions it shows blue, violet and a brownish red. A step cut with large facets lets this colour stand as one, instead of breaking it up into reflections the way a brilliant cut does. If you want to see the stone rather than its play of light, this is the cut to choose.
How does this ring differ from the other tanzanite and spinel ring?
In the cut and the construction. This one has an elongated emerald cut in four open prongs, and the spinel runs only as pavé along the band, so the silhouette stays slim and long. The other one carries a tanzanite in a classic emerald cut with a closed spinel entourage all around, which makes it look noticeably fuller.
How robust is the ring?
Tanzanite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7 and is prone to cleavage, so it is considerably softer than sapphire. Fine for everyday wear, but not for knocks against hard edges. Take it off for sport and gardening. At Mohs 8, the pink spinel on the band is the more robust part of the ring.
