This 18kt rose gold ring carries a tanzanite of around 2 ct in an emerald cut, framed all the way round by an entourage of pink spinel that continues along the band, in size 54. With its broad step facets, the emerald cut shows the blue-violet of the tanzanite as a calm surface rather than as sparkle. The circle of spinel sets pink against it, a complementary contrast that also makes the centre stone look considerably larger. Handmade in Munich. €2,800, a one-of-a-kind piece.
Two treasures in one ring. Tanzanite and spinel in duet.

Frequently asked questions
How does this ring differ from the other tanzanite and spinel ring?
In the cut and the construction. This one carries a tanzanite in a classic emerald cut with a closed entourage of pink spinel all around. The other one has an elongated emerald cut, sits in four open prongs and carries the spinel only as pavé on the band. This one looks fuller, the other slimmer.
What is an entourage?
A closed circle of small stones around the centre stone, called a halo in English. It enlarges the set surface and makes the main stone look bigger than its carat weight alone would.
How robust is the ring?
Tanzanite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7 and is prone to cleavage. Fine for everyday wear, but not for knocks against hard edges, so take it off for sport and gardening. At Mohs 8, the spinel around it is the more resilient part and helps protect the sides of the centre stone.
