This 18kt rose gold ring carries a 1 ct tanzanite, in size 54. Tanzanite is found in a single place on earth: a field of a few square kilometres near Merelani in northern Tanzania, discovered only in 1967. Geologically, that makes it many times rarer than diamond. Rose gold is an unusual choice for a blue-violet stone. Its copper content sets a warm counterpoint instead of intensifying the colour the way white gold would. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €1,100.
Tanzanite, one of the rarest gemstones in the world.

Frequently asked questions
Why is tanzanite considered rare?
There is exactly one deposit in the world: a field of a few square kilometres near Merelani in northern Tanzania, discovered in 1967. It has been mined ever since, and estimates of how long it will last run to a few decades.
Why does the colour change with the viewing angle?
Tanzanite is pleochroic. From different directions it shows blue, violet and a brownish red. How the cutter orients the rough decides which colour dominates, which is why two tanzanites of the same weight look very different.
Is tanzanite suitable for everyday wear?
At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it sits below sapphire and is prone to cleavage. It wears well as a ring, but not for knocks against hard edges. Take it off for sport and gardening, and keep it out of the ultrasonic bath.
