This 18kt yellow gold ring carries a tricolour tourmaline with three natural colour zones in a single crystal, in size 54. Tourmaline grows in pegmatite veins over long periods. When the chemical make-up of its surroundings changes along the way, the crystal takes in different elements section by section. That is how colour zones form along the crystal axis. The best-known case is watermelon tourmaline, with a green rind and a pink core. A handmade one-of-a-kind piece from Munich. €1,200.
Three colours, one tourmaline: nature in its purest splendour.

Frequently asked questions
How do three colours get into one stone?
They form as the crystal grows. Tourmaline develops in the rock over long periods, and every change in its chemical environment is written into the crystal as a new colour zone. That makes the stone a kind of record of its own formation.
Why are multicoloured tourmalines more expensive than single-coloured ones?
Because of the material lost in cutting. The cutter has to orient the rough so that all three zones stay visible in the finished stone, in sensible proportions. That costs far more material than a cut optimised purely for maximum weight.
Is the colour treated?
No. The zoning grew naturally and cannot be created artificially. Heat treatment would blur the transitions and destroy the appeal.
